Reading at Bourton Primary:
At Bourton Primary, we believe reading is an essential life-long skill. We teach reading so that our pupils can read with fluency, accuracy and understanding. We want our pupils to develop a love of reading and encourage them to read for pleasure.
RWI Phonics:
Phonics is the key to unlocking reading and writing. At Bourton Primary we follow the RWI Phonics scheme. From the summer term in preschool, our children are exposed to the nursery programme of RWI.
Once children enter Reception, they begin learning their set 1 sounds in full and progress through the scheme until they reach the grey reading book assessment.

Guided reading lessons in KS2 help our pupils build their vocabulary and develop their comprehension using a variety of high-quality texts. Teachers choose books which relate to the children’s interests, have a PSHE/ topic link and are taken from the recommended Primary schools List.
Reading for Pleasure:
As a school, we aim to inspire more children to read for pleasure. We do this through a number of avenues, including: our protected story time at 3pm for every class, every day, development of our outdoor reading area and creative reading areas in every classroom.
Reading at home is an excellent opportunity to help inspire and build a love of reading.
